The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has posted information about the voluntary recall of three lots of wound care gel products by a California company due to concerns over microbial contamination. According to the recall notice, the affected product was found to contain Lysinibacillus fusiformis, an environmental organism.
The notice warns that while this organism is generally considered to have low pathogenicity in healthy individuals, it can survive in adverse conditions and act as an opportunistic pathogen. Patients with open wounds, compromised skin barriers, or weakened immune systems, including elderly, diabetic, or immunocompromised individuals, may be at increased risk for infection, skin irritation, and/or delayed wound healing. In severe cases, particularly among vulnerable populations, infections may lead to life-threatening complications such as endocarditis or central nervous system infection.
