The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the recall of a shampoo by an international manufacturer due to the possible presence of microbial contamination. Distributors in New York and California handled the product and the manufacturer reports the shampoo may have been further distributed to other states.
While at the time of the recall notice there had been no reports of user harm or injury, the product had the potential to be contaminated with Klebsiella oxytoca. Infections due to this opportunistic pathogen are most often treated with antibiotics; however, some strains can exhibit significant antibiotic resistance. Consumers are advised to stop using the shampoo.
According to the recall notice posted by the FDA:
Exposure to these bacteria can cause infections in humans, including infection in the eyes, nose and skin, with additional reactions for consumers with immune-compromised conditions.
Dedicated to helping companies prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers are the scientists at MPL Laboratories. Their facility is fully equipped and accredited to provide testing for a broad spectrum of microbes and other contaminants that could be present in a variety of goods and products. All testing takes place at MPL’s FDA registered and cGMP, ISO 17025 compliant laboratory. These services not only protect the public from exposure risks, they are also vital for avoiding costly product recalls, damaging public relations, and the potential legal fees that companies that manufacture, import, or distribute contaminated products may encounter.
