Sparta, New Jersey, September 12, 2025
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of several over-the-counter antiseptic lotion soaps, antimicrobial foam soaps, external analgesics, and antiseptic cleansers. The manufacturer initiated the voluntary recall after detecting contamination with Burkholderia cepacia, a bacterium associated with potentially serious health risks.
According to the recall notice, exposure to Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) may lead to severe, potentially life-threatening infections. While healthy individuals with minor skin lesions may experience localized infections, those who are immunocompromised face a greater risk of bloodstream infections and life-threatening sepsis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that many B. cepacia complex bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, making infections difficult to treat. Fortunately, at the time of the recall, no adverse events had been reported to the manufacturer. Distributors and consumers were advised to check their inventories immediately and properly dispose of any affected products.
