Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of 3 water-based tattoo pigments by a company based in Nevada. The recall announcement states the products are contaminated with high concentrations of microorganisms which present a health concern to consumers.
According to the FDA posting:
Commonly reported symptoms of tattoo ink associated infections include the appearance of rashes or lesions consisting of red papules solely in areas where the contaminated ink has been applied. Some tattoo infections can result in permanent scarring. Symptoms can be difficult to recognize, as other conditions (e.g. allergic reactions) may also present with similar findings.
Fortunately, at the time of the recall posting, no illnesses had been reported. The recall was reportedly initiated after the company became aware of the results of samples collected and analyzed by the FDA. These tested positive for multiple microorganisms.
